Rob Malkani is a New York City-based screenwriter, producer and director. In 2001, he formed CurbSide Pictures to finance and produce independent feature films. His first feature, which he co-wrote and produced, was the 2003 thriller Dot.kill directed by John Irvin (City of Industry, Hamburger Hill). The film was produced for $6 million and shot on location in Liverpool, England, and New York City. Rob’s follow-up production was the 2004 feature film Turning Green, an Irish coming-of-age comedy starring Timothy Hutton, Alessandro Nivola and Colm Meaney. The film shot on location in Ireland and New York City for a budget of approximately $1 million and will be released theatrically in 2009. In 2006, Rob wrote and executive produced the feature film Day Zero. The film stars Elijah Wood, Chris Klein, Jon Bernthal, Ally Sheedy and Ginnifer Goodwin in a character-driven drama that tells the story of three best friends in New York City who get drafted to serve in the U.S. military on the same day and have thirty days to come to terms with their fate. Day Zero premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2007 and was released in theaters in January 2008. Rob’s latest film was The Steam Experiment, starring Val Kilmer, which he wrote and executive produced. The film tells the tale of six people who get locked in a steam room. It had a limited theatrical release in 2009. Rob has already written a sequel to the film, entitled The Crime Experiment, which begins production in the fall of 2009. Rob is also producing the upcoming noir film Black Wings Has My Angel with Tony Moody and Elijah Wood.
Rob will make his directorial debut in early 2010 on another script he wrote entitled One Four Seven Greenwich. The film is a dark, gritty, New York-set crime thriller in the vein of films like The Usual Suspects, Seven, Training Day and even The Godfather. One Four Seven Greenwich will be suspenseful and raw - a film that grabs you by the throat from the first frame and never lets go. At its heart the film explores themes of greed, friendship, betrayal, trust and, most importantly, the destructive power of money. The film combines Rob’s lifelong love of the crime thriller genre with his real life experience in the worlds of both Wall Street finance and corporate law.
Rob started his professional life in the corporate world before making his way to the movies. He left a position as a Vice-President in the investment banking division of Credit Suisse in 2000 to pursue his passion for film. Prior to joining Credit Suisse, Rob was a corporate attorney at the prestigious New York law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Dartmouth College. Now a prolific screenwriter, Rob easily shifts gears between producing and screenwriting, and he has completed several feature scripts that are at various stages of development and production.
Rob is repped by Zero Gravity Management and attorney Ken Weinrib.
